Ylioppilaskunnan Soittajat or YS (Helsinki University Symphony Orchestra) – full-sized symphony orchestra, which gives concerts, organizes balls and takes part in various academic festivities.
YS was founded in 1926, but it carries on the traditions of the Academic Orchestra (founded in Turku already in 1747) as its immediate successor. Despite the long and dusty history, life in YS offers ambitious concerts programs and lots of social activities each semester. Concert tours in Finland and Europe are a special treat that take place on a regular basis.
Who are we
As a non-professional student orchestra, YS brings together musicians from various backgrounds. The majority of players are studying at the University of Helsinki or in other academic institutions of the capital region, such as Aalto University, University of the Arts Helsinki and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences. However, YS is a home for all music enthusiasts regardless of study area or work status.
How to join
Weekly rehearsals are held on Mondays at 18:00–21:00 in the city centre area. Player auditions take place every September and also occasionally during the semester. For the next auditions please see more here.
